Learn more about our A Board Signs

What is an A-board sign and why choose one?

An A-board sign is a free-standing, A-shaped advertising board - also known as an A-frame sign or sandwich board - that folds flat and stands on the pavement outside your premises to promote your business to potential customers passing by.

A board signs are the perfect way to ensure your business is visible to people who pass by; with a wide range of designs and sizes on offer, we're confident we have the perfect A frame to match your specific preferences. Whether you want your logo, text or any other imagery on your wooden A board sign, we can help to accommodate your needs with one of our completely custom advertising boards

We also have a couple of unique options if you're looking for something a little bit different in your sign. The colourwave allows you to customise the inside of your A-board sign, and you can even provide us with a specific pattern to wholly fit in with your brand. With everything from white-washed designs to A boards with a poster holder, you're sure to find the perfect personalised A board sign from UK Sign Shop.

What sizes do A-boards come in?

Our A-boards are available in a variety of sizes, with many following standard poster sizes, so you can match the board to your frontage and footfall. A2 (420 x 594mm) suits narrow shopfronts and tight doorways, A1 (594 x 841mm) is the popular high-street standard that balances visibility with a compact footprint, and A0 (841 x 1189mm) gives maximum impact for busy footfall and forecourts. As a rule, choose the largest board your pavement can safely take while leaving a clear route for pedestrians. If you are not sure which size suits your space, our team can advise on the best A board sign for your location.

Size Dimensions Best For
A2 420 x 594 mm Suits narrow shopfronts and tight doorways.
A1 594 x 841 mm The popular high-street standard that balances visibility with a compact footprint.
A0 841 x 1189 mm Gives maximum impact for busy footfall and forecourts.

What are A-boards made from?

We create our A-boards from a variety of materials best suited to advertising boards - 12mm FSC-sourced plywood, sustainable European Redwood, galvanised steel are amongst our most popular options.

All of the materials we use are carefully chosen to prioritise the things that matter most. We only source the very best to ensure a durable, high quality final product that's been sustainably created wherever possible, with a weather-resistant coating available on some of our hand-sanded wooden A frame sign designs to make them versatile for any use.

How do you put your graphics on an A-board sign?

There are two main ways to get your branding onto an A frame board, with the best option depending on how you'll use it:

The first is direct printing, where your artwork is printed straight onto the board for a clean, permanent finish that is ideal if your message stays the same year-round.

The second is a poster-holder or snap-frame board, which lets you slide your own printed posters in and out so you can update the message yourself. Snap-frame boards open on all four sides and let you change a poster in under a minute with no tools.

We also offer chalkboard-style A-boards for cafes and pubs that want to hand-write daily specials and wipe them off again.

Most of our A-boards are double-sided, so your message is seen by people approaching from both directions along the pavement.

Catch The Eye Of Potential Customers

Catching the eye of potential customers walking straight past your business is a crucial thing for any business on the street. With one of our a frame board signs, you can capitalise on your foot traffic with a premium look and feel advertising board, completely personalised to fit your branding.

Take Advantage Of Seasonal Sales

If you often offer seasonal promotions or sales, a board pavement signs can be a handy marketing asset. With affordable designs on offer without compromising on the quality of the final product, you can have one of our a frame signs outside your door to help tempt people in!

Designed With Durability In Mind

We work very hard to ensure all of our plywood is FSC sourced, meaning it all comes from forests that are responsibly managed and renewable. Once we source the best wood, we hand sand it and can even treat the final product to improve its weather resistance.

Will an A-board sign blow over in the wind?

A folding A-board is designed to sit low and wide, which keeps it stable in normal high-street conditions. In exposed or gusty locations there are a few sensible steps. Position the board against a wall or in a sheltered spot rather than in an open, wind-funnelled gap, angle it so the wind passes over rather than into the face, and bring it indoors in severe winds or overnight. Because our A frame boards fold flat, storing them away at the end of trading is quick and also protects your investment. For very exposed sites such as forecourts and car parks, it would be worth considering a heavier weighted option as there's only so much wind a normal sandwich board can resist!

Do I need permission to put an A-board on the pavement?

In most of the UK you need permission before placing an A-board on a public pavement. This usually means a pavement licence or trading consent from your local council, and the rules vary between authorities. Some common conditions can include that the sign must not block the pavement, must leave a clear route for wheelchair users, pushchairs and people with sight loss, and must be kept away from crossings, bus stops and doorways. Many councils also ask that the advertising board is removed outside trading hours. We recommend checking with your local council before you buy, and having a measure where you want to place your A frame to make sure you have enough room before buying!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an A-board and an A-frame sign?+

There is no difference. A-board sign and A-frame sign are both names for the same free-standing, A-shaped advertising board that folds flat and sits on the pavement. Some people also call them sandwich boards.

Are wooden A-boards suitable for outdoor use?+

Yes. Our wooden A boards are hand-sanded and can be treated to improve weather resistance (either through our optional coating or can be done yourself after delivery), so they are built to stand up to daily use outdoors in UK weather.

Are your A-board signs double-sided?+

Many of our A-boards can be chosen to display your artwork on either one or both faces, so you can choose whether you want your message to reach people walking towards you from just one or either side.

How do you change the poster on an A-board?+

On a poster-holder or snap-frame a-board you lift the hinged edges of the frame, drop in your new poster behind the clear protective cover, and press the edges back down. It takes under a minute and needs no tools. On one of our directly printed custom A board designs the graphic is fixed, which we recommend when your branding or messaging won’t change.

How long does an A-board sign take to make?+

Every one of our custom A frame signs is made to order in our own UK workshop, so we manufacture and print it specifically for you rather than shipping a stock item. After our free artwork check, we work as quickly as possible to manufacture and ship your design.
