What Are LED Shop Signs Made From?
Our LED shop signs are built from the same short list of materials, chosen because they last outdoors rather than because they're cheap.
- Aluminium - trays, letter returns and most lightbox frames are aluminium, which does not rust and stays light enough to fix to a standard fascia without heavy structural work.
- Acrylic - most faces are light-diffusing acrylic, which spreads the LED output evenly across the whole surface instead of leaving visible hot spots over each module. It's also the reason a face-lit letter reads as a solid block of colour rather than a row of dots.
- LED modules - the LED sign lighting sits behind or beside the face rather than being visible. Individual modules can be replaced without scrapping the sign, which is what separates a repairable sign from a disposable one.
- Printed graphics - where a design can't be cut, it's printed on our digital printers using UV-stable inks and applied to the face.
Outdoor illuminated signs are supplied in sealed housings built for year-round UK conditions - rain, frost and UV exposure. Materials are chosen for longevity, not just cost, and every sign is individually checked by our team before it's packed.
How Much Power Does An LED Sign Use?
LED sign lights draw a small fraction of the power the fluorescent tubes and glass neon of older illuminated signs needed, and choosing LED light up signage over either cuts running costs sharply. That's why leaving a sign lit overnight is far less costly and doesn't have to be a decision that's agonised over. Published trade comparisons put a typical LED-lit shop sign at somewhere between a third and two thirds of the consumption of an equivalent neon one.
Running cost is only part of it. LED modules are typically rated for 50,000+ hours, which will outlast neon tubing several times over, and there's no gas tube to fracture, no ballast to fail and no specialist re-gassing when a section goes dark.
Do Illuminated Signs Need Planning Permission?
Often not, but the rules are tighter than for an unlit sign, so it's worth checking before you order. In England, an illuminated sign on your own business premises falls under Class 4 of the advertisement consent regulations, which grants deemed consent - meaning you can display it without applying, provided it stays inside the class limits. Non-illuminated fascia signs sit under the simpler Class 5 instead.
The Class 4 limits to check
- Size - a projecting illuminated sign is restricted to 0.75 square metres per face.
- Projection - it must not project more than one metre, or two thirds of the pavement width, whichever is less.
- Mounting height - the lowest part must sit at least 2.5 metres above the ground, and the top no higher than 4.6 metres or first-floor window level.
- Illumination - it must be static, with no flashing, scrolling or animation.
- Brightness - capped at 600 cd/m² for displays up to 10 square metres, or 300 cd/m² for anything larger.
Going beyond the limits
Exceed any of those limits and you'll need express advertisement consent from your local authority. A listed building may need listed building consent as well. The statutory decision period is eight weeks from validation, so factor that into your timings.
Signs inside the building
Interior signage is usually outside advertisement control altogether - a backlit logo sign behind an office desk needs no consent. The exemption is narrower than it sounds, though: an illuminated interior sign within a metre of a window or door, where it can be read from the street, is treated as an outdoor advertisement.
