Seven tips to help you add summertime kerb appeal to your exterior

With the sun high in the sky, the flowers in bloom, and the lemonade stands springing up all across the neighbourhood, it’s safe to say that summer is the time when communities really look around and feel proud about the homes they've created. Summer is often the time that we feel the urge to have a little spruce inside and outside our houses – usually because the sunshine certainly helps them look their best, and a fresh lick of paint only adds to the image of a beautiful home. If you’ve been showing your interior a lot of love but you’re looking to rejuvenate your exterior too, here are seven top tips on giving your home a little bit of kerb appeal.

Think about the approach up to your house – what does the overall impression of this space give? The key to a lovely walk-up is to have a neat and tidy path, a weed-free driveway, and to ensure that any gates and fences are given a lick of paint to wake them up again.

2. Refresh your doorway

The front door is the focal point of any exterior, and this is where you should focus your attention. Choosing a new colour can completely alter the look of your home, but make sure you choose wisely. It’s also worth noting that door accessories such as knockers and numbers can look lovely, but not if you cut corners and go for the cheap option. Invest slightly more in good accessories to really see the benefit, and always consider the period of your property before purchasing.

3. Spell it out

All of the best doorways feature a sign – we should know, at UK Sign Shop, we supply them! A carefully thought-out sign depicting your property name, surname, or house number ties an entryway together and shows you’ve gone the extra mile to make your exterior the best in the neighbourhood. You don’t have to go traditional – you could personalise a welcome message or invite guests to remove their shoes.

4. Light the way

Lighting is a crucial element to achieve kerb appeal. Lighting should accentuate your hard work, sprucing up your outside, and can work well in multiple locations. Small and simple solar lights can highlight the front path, and feature lighting can adorn the doorway. Try and keep your lighting arrangements symmetrical for bonus points. We stock lots of high quality solar lights for this very purpose – check them out!

5. Add some greenery

The best house fronts always feature a little greenery, and you needn’t be put off by space. If you’re lucky enough to have a lawn, some beautiful potted plants in fancy pots, and even a tree or two then your job is made infinitely easier, but it's just as possible to get green fingers involved on a smaller scale. Hanging baskets, window boxes, and crawlers need very little room to grow and bring the whole space to life.

6. It’s the mat that matters

Something of a status symbol, the front door mat has become a fun way to give guests a suggestion of your style and potentially hint as to what your home is like when you cross the threshold. You could go classic with a simple coir mat, you could opt for a modernised patterned number, or perhaps adorn your porch with a message for guests – whether it’s welcoming or a little tongue-in-cheek is entirely up to you! For a selection of luxury doormats with a whole host of kerb appeal, we stock a little something for every taste.

7. Be yourself

Lastly, the most important factor in a beautiful home is ultimately the people inside. It makes a great visual impact to have everything neat and tidy, but the most important factor is that it is loved and consequently well cared for. A home that oozes your personality will have a lot more appeal than a blank canvas that is clearly not a reflection of the exuberant personalities inside. "I have had the House Number and Name made on two separate orders. I was very impressed with the first so ordered the second which was to the same high standard. I was kept informed of each stage of the process and the delivery was very quick indeed. I have no hesitation in recommending The UK sign shop and I will certainly use them again if the need arises."
